Guerilla Dance Squad: Adventures off the Dance Floor
This is a playful dance workshop where we will discuss, brainstorm & practice group dancing in 'non-traditional' dance spaces!
II will share some favorite stretches, dance moves & fun ways to create seemingly-choreographed (but improvised) dance in various spaces.
It is my hope that participants will take these new dance moves, friends & music & bring them to....
public parks
dance parties
sidewalks
school hallways
kitchens
subway stations
& family gatherings

lesson plan
1) I'll teach some of my favorite dance moves from various influences (including moves I've learned from Bollywood movies, children, Stephen Colbert, Japanese Butoh dance, modern dance, aerobics videos, Little Miss Sunshine, the Back Street Boys, Lady Gaga and more)
2) Everyone will have the opportunity to share favorite dance moves
3) We will practice group improvised dances - where people take turns leading the group and everyone else follows (weather permitting, we will do this outdoors)
4) Brainstorm & chat with like minded people about good spots for group dance!
facilitator experience
In middle school I used to say "I can't dance" -- that is until I started copying people around me and eventually something just clicked. When I was in high school I led an aerobics dance class in the hallways and haven't turned back since. I started the Guerilla Dance Squad in college, where friends would do group improv dance on a regular basis, indoors and outdoors. I led a really fun all-ages zombie aerobics dance class on Halloween in Jamaica Plain, and I have been hoping to have more outdoor dances now that the sun is back. It's not only a great way to bring individuals and communities together, it can also be incredibly healing - physically and mentally - so those are a few of the reasons why I dance!
I love all types of dance, & I particularly enjoy pop, Bollywood, West African, Cumbia, hip-hop & modern.
intended audience
This workshop is for people of all ages, skills, & experience (ie. dance divas, 'I can't dance-ers,' kids, grandparents, etc.).
