African Hand Drumming Circle

Come and experience the joys and benefits of African Hand Drumming in a welcoming, fun atmosphere.
Participants will come together to play traditional rhythms from West Africa and create new rhythms, while developing community.
This is a fully hands on, participating workshop/drum circle - with guidance from trained professional drum teachers- and welcomes absolute beginners to
seasoned drummers.

lesson plan

1)- Intro to the Djembe/African Hand Drum.- connections to West Africa and Beyond
2)- Some basic techniques/sounds and how to create them
3)- Learning and playing traditional rhythms and creating new one (the bulk of the time)
4)- Resources for continued drumming

facilitator experience

Stu Mendelson -Drum Teacher/Faculty for the DrumConnection (www.drumconnection.com) and other Faculty of the DrumConnection.

for the last 4 years, Stu has been teaching beginning African Hand Drumming for adults and children for the DrumConnection drum school in Arlington Mass.
He has taught classes in most of the local Adult Educations Centers (Boston, Newton, Brookline, etc.), for the Arlington Center for the Arts, and at the DrumConnection
drum room. The Drumconnection has been the leader in the teaching of traditional African Hand Drumming in the Boston Area for more than 20 years!

Addtionally, Stu has study under traditional Djembe Master, both in Boston and in Guinea, West Africa, including Sayon Baran, Wadaba, and Famoudou Konate

intended audience

All participants are welcomed. If you have a Djembe or similar drum please bring it with you (most drums welcomed, but no "stick" drums (i.e. drum kit drums, Frame drums, Bodorons)
For children under 12, parent or Adult participation is requested.
