You Can Make Meaningful Photos with Toy and Alternative Cameras

This workshop will give a basic run-down of the many kinds of alternative and toy cameras that are popular today, along with information on where to get them, how to shoot them, where to get and develop film and what kind to use, and will include a slide show of images.

Some specific topics will include Holga cameras, pinhole cameras, modifications you can make yourself, using medium format film, using toy lenses or pinholes on digital cameras, cross-processing, etc. If time permits we will discuss what makes a good photograph and how the tools and processes you use can support your subject matter. There will be some cameras to pass around and look at, and handouts for everyone with more info. There will be time for question/answer and discussion.

facilitator experience

Steph Plourde-Simard is a graduate of the New England School of Photography (NESOP) and a documentary and fine art photographer. Related to this workshop, Steph has been shooting with Holga cameras for 9 years, pinhole cameras for 3 years, and has used a variety of toy cameras and also alternative printing processes such as Cyanotypes and platinum/palladium.

Anyone who enjoys photography and either wants to learn more about it, better identify how some photos are made, or is interested in using or experimenting with all kinds of cameras. For serious AND just-for-fun photographers.
