Creative Birth Doulas' Crash Course in Labor Support

A person's birthing experience will be remembered for a lifetime and the kind of support that is received during this time is crucial to help form a positive experience. As doulas, we aim to empower folks in their birth choices by providing optimum labor support in a trusting and creative environment. Join us and learn how we do it! We will discuss the basics of how to provide informational, emotional, and physical support, as well as how to be an advocate in a hospital, birth center, or at a homebirth.

Please keep in mind that this is not a doula training course, just a basics in support course.

details

lesson plan

-Basic explanation of labor--its phases, and what is happening hormonally.
-Examples of how to support during each phase. (This part is very hands-on and will work best if people partner up and try techniques on each other. Physical limitations are not a problem--there are tons of ways to support to the best of your ability.)
-Advocacy at birth location. (Hospitals, birth centers, homebirth, and how roles can differ at each location and with different types of practitioners.)

Note: We are planning on watching a short video that shows a birth. As birth videos go, this one isn't terribly "graphic," but we completely understand if you want to leave the room. (The video is roughly 15 minutes long.)

facilitator experience

We are three ALACE, (Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators), trained professional doulas with experience in facilitating workshops and supporting clients. One of our facilitators is currently studying to be a midwife.
